Baby Loop

I’ve lost count on how many LoopDeLoop challenges I have entered, but this one has got to be my favourite.

As soon as I heard that the theme was “Baby”, the idea for my animation came almost instantly. My actual thought process went like this; “Baby…bouncing baby…oh a literal bouncing baby – that’d be funny.”

So then I set out to work!

Cel animation can take a while and I had less than two months to get this all done. With not having too much cel experience at that time, I wanted to get the whole process down, minimising the chance of redoes and indecision. So after I settled on the style, I made an animatic in After Effects, to have my timing set in stone and to help me exaggerate the smearing and squash and stretch I would be giving to the arm and the baby. The longest step was definitely in Animate. This was where all the animation needed to be completed. I did not move onto the next stage until I was completely satisfied with the animation – so all that was left to do was to grind through the colouring phase in Photoshop.

I worked on it almost every night after work and I am so glad I put my 100% into this because as a result – my animation ended up getting the most votes at the Melbourne screening! And it received a lot of attention online, getting reposted by large instagram accounts such as motiongraphics_p

Special thanks to Sean Crowley who did the amazing sound design for this project!
